The Art of Networking: Lessons from a Child

Traveling with my seven-year-old son is a journey filled with awe and learning. Whether

we are exploring a new city in our country or venturing to distant lands, I marvel at his

ease, confidence, and comfort in meeting and talking to people. As I watch him navigate

social interactions with an effortless charm, I am reminded of the pure essence of

networking. Over time, my fascination has transformed into valuable learning points that

we, as adults, can embrace to master the art of networking.

  • Genuine Curiosity

Children approach new interactions with genuine curiosity. They ask questions not out of

obligation but from a sincere desire to learn and understand. This authenticity is refreshing

and engaging. As adults, we can rekindle our sense of curiosity by showing real interest in

the people we meet, asking thoughtful questions, and listening attentively to their stories

and experiences. Next time you meet someone new, focus on being genuinely curious.

Ask open-ended questions and listen more than you speak.

  • Fearlessness in Approach

My son approaches people without the fear of rejection or judgment. He does not overthink

the outcomes but simply enjoys the moment. This fearlessness allows him to connect easily

with others. We often hold back due to the fear of not being accepted or making a mistake.

Embracing a childlike fearlessness can open doors to new relationships and opportunities.

Challenge yourself to initiate conversations with at least three new people this week,

without worrying about the outcome.

  • Being Present

Children are masters at living in the present moment. When my son talks to someone, he

gives them his full attention, making the interaction meaningful. Being present in

conversations, without distractions, creates a sense of respect and value for the other

person, fostering stronger connections. In your next networking opportunity, put away

your phone and be fully present in the conversation. Make eye contact and actively

engage.

  • Embracing Simplicity

Children communicate in simple, clear terms. They do not complicate their interactions

with jargon or overthinking. This simplicity makes their conversations approachable and

relatable. As adults, we can simplify our communication to be more effective and

accessible. Practice clear and straightforward communication. Avoid jargon and focus

on conveying your message in a way that is easy to understand.

  • Building Trust Through Playfulness

My son often uses playfulness to break the ice and build trust. Laughter and shared fun

create bonds quickly. While professional networking might not always allow for

playfulness, finding ways to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere can help build trust

and rapport. Incorporate light-heartedness into your interactions. Share a laugh, a

personal story, or a light moment to create a connection.
