Strategic Planning – Is it Necessary?

Updated: Jun 20, 2023

Getting your organization off the ground is one thing, but keeping it on track is core to ensuring growth and success.

Growth and success are not products of random processes, but rather the deliberate and intentional practices that come from a well thought out, visionary strategic plan. In the fast-paced, ever-evolving world we live in today, more and more organizations are recognizing the importance of strategic planning. Someone once said that “if you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there.” Well, we say - don’t lead your organization on a road to anywhere, instead build a strategic plan that will help reaffirm your company’s future direction. In doing so, you will create a map that delineates your priorities and objectives, defines the kind of resources that will be required, and sources the mix of skills and expertise that will drive your priorities. Then, add in a reassessment mechanism with checks and balances to ensure you stay on course and move into actionable plans.

Let’s consider some of the elements that makes strategic planning an imperative process for both emerging and consolidated organizations:

  • It builds on the progress achieved by the company/organization and addresses new challenges.

  • It ring-fences a time of the year for the organization to pause, reflect and undertake some visioning for the future and stay ahead of cutting edge, emerging innovations.

  • It fosters clarity in setting the expectations of the organization and reduces ambiguity and confusion, which are essential to furthering buy-in and accountability.

  • It promotes participation and inclusion, and cultivates a collective and shared sense of responsibility – employees will have a sense of purpose in their role within the organization and know what their contribution to the achievement of those objectives will be.

  • It boosts the organization's operational efficiency and efficacy – by aligning the company’s “3 Ps” – people, purse, and priorities!

While some may find strategic planning a tedious process - for those of us, like Hera Associates, who are involved in setting up and leading impact driven, transformative, people-centered organizations - there is no way around this.
